My Fitness Journey: I Don't Sweat. I Sparkle.

On my 39th birthday, I told myself I needed to get myself together- physically-BEFORE I turn 40. You see, I had my son at 19 and body “snapped” right back. Like literally the next day. By the time I had my second child, I was still in decent shape.  I mean I put on a bikini on an all-girls trip and felt no shame. (Well, to be transparent I stuck a picture of Beyoncé in my snack drawer at work to help me fight cravings before the trip. Whatever works, right?!)

 

Today, I am closer to being 40 than not and three kids later I am feeling some type of way. I mean my face is still tight and radiant, but my body is not. Particularly, my midsection.

 

 

If anyone knows me, I have always had moments in time where I hit the gym or did my workout videos consistently and then I stopped. For months and often years I would repeat this cycle over and over again.

 

I am sure NONE of you can relate.

 

Now that I look back, I noticed this happened a lot when low-rise jeans were a thing. (That’s my story and I am sticking to it.) I have on a pair now and baby if I don’t have a muffin top to rival the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man right now. I DON’T THINK THESE JEANS WERE MEANT FOR ANYONE and I am SO happy high-rise jeans are in so I can “tuck the pooch” if you know what I mean. I digressed.

 

Being a “wannabe” fitness junkie, many years ago I bought a Polar F6 watch to see how many calories I would burn for each workout as a way to try to motivate me to stay exercising. It worked- for a while.

 

Fast forward and I am turning the big 4-0. *screaming*

 

Last year I won an Apple watch for selling my whitening toothpaste, which really works and you can buy here. At first, I was a bit intimidated, but I soon got the hang of it and love it. Well, let me back up a bit. There really isn’t anything particularly special about the Apple watch. (Miss me with the rebuttals in my comment section.) It is just a watch where I have the capability to read text messages. Really. That’s it. BUT it’s saving grace is you can track the calories you burn, how often you stand, and how many minutes of exercise you get in daily.

 

So, I make it a game to close all my rings. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I am currently at 600 calories, but I started my goal at 300, so I am progressing.

 

Currently, I am obsessed with my spin bike. I bought it a little over a year ago and ride it quite often. (At first, I didn’t, but now that I have an audio fitness app called Aaptiv on my phone and I ride it more often now. Want to try Aaptiv? Message me and I will send you 30 days free. This audio fitness app changed my life.)

 

I paid $120 for my spin bike. It’s now $160 on Amazon. I know Peloton is the BEST bike, but for $2000 I can’t commit to that right now- maybe one day or maybe never. I love my Sunny Health & Fitness Bike. I named her BB, which is short for Brinn’s Bike. Aren’t I clever?

 

 

 

My bike has the following:

It came mostly assembled and it doesn't take up too much room. I put it in a small corner of my basement.  I can move it myself as it has wheels on the front of it. I did have to get used to the seat because it hurt my bum-bum at first, but now I am fine. It does have an LCD monitor that tracks your time, speed, distance, and calories burned, but I found the calorie tracker is off, so I rely on my Apple watch to calculate my calorie burn. I do like how the show cages are adjustable and that I don’t necessarily need spin shoes. I wear my old tennis shoes and have never had a problem.

 

I also subscribed to BeachBody on Demand because I fall for those late-night infomercials. But seriously, they have ALL the popular fitness programs on there for $99 a year. (They have a monthly, 3 and 6-month payment plan too.) You can stream off any device and it comes with workout calendars and their nutrition program. They do push Shakeology, but I buy my own protein shakes and hydration tablets, which are MUCH cheaper.

 

So, between my spin bike and BOD, I have noticed a significant change in my midsection, energy, and mood. Below is a picture I posted on my Instagram the other day and I WAS EVEN SURPRISED at my progress after just THREE MONTHS! I don’t eat the best, but I always eat better than I did the day before. I have never been one who could stick to a “diet”. Normally, I would fail before I even started. So, I have stopped “dieting” and become more conscious about what I put in my mouth, how much and how often.

 

 

My whole point of writing this post is to encourage you to up your fitness game this year. I work out daily because I it makes me feel good and I like what I am seeing. Besides, technology has enabled me to get a workout whenever and wherever. I played the game for many years thinking it was IMPOSSIBLE to work out with my busy schedule. It’s possible and I am living proof.

 

I am excited to see where this journey takes me, but one thing’s for sure, I will be stronger by the time I get there. Wherever that may be.
